Biodegradability of organic substance present in sludge is rising with the increasing content of these substances in the dissolved form and with the increasing size reduction of solid phase in sludge. Anaerobic biochemical degradation of sludge (fermentation) is therefore limited by the ratę and efficiency of the first phase of that process - hydrolytic phase. The principal aim of the ultrasonic pretreatment - ultrasonic disintegration - is therefore to break up the organic substance and to damage the cells of organisms which are not taking part in the anaerobic degradation, where by we can obtain substrate subject to easy biological degradation by anaerobic microorganisms. The acquisition of efficient disintegration is conditioned by the applied field having respective parameters and exposition time corresponding with physicochemical parameters of the sludge (concentration of solid phase, content of organie substances, size of sludge particles). The efficiency of disintegration effect may be assessed among others by the volumetric increase of organie substance dissolved in sludge water measured by the concentration of COD (chemical oxygen demand) and the increase of concentration (of volatile fatty acids) as one of the intermediate products of biomass degradation during the fermentation process. VFA are the main source of organie carbon for the development of many anaerobic microorganisms, including also bacteria removing phosphor from the sludge. The principal objective of the present investigation studies is to increase the acąuisition of VFA in effect of preliminary ultrasonic disintegration of the sludge.
