The journal bearings of internal-combustion engine transmit the large dynamic loads causing the non-linear behaviour of the tribo system shaft-bearing. The exact determination of the crankshaft critical speeds needs the knowledge of dynamic characteristic described by the spring and damping coefficients of the bearings supporting the crankshaft. The paper introduces the methods allowing determination of the spring and damping coefficients of dynamically loaded journal bearings. The possibilities to calculate these coefficients on the basis of own developed program were analysed. Numerical solution of Reynolds, energy and viscosity equations under assumption of laminar oil flow in the bearing gap and parallel orientation of the journal and bearing axis gives the resultant hydrodynamic forces allowing the calculation of journal centre trajectory. The spring and damping coefficients can be calculated for every point of the journal centre trajectory and the variations of coefficients over the crankshaft cycle can be applied in the dynamic analysis of the system crankshaft-bearings.
