Interdependence of friction drag in piston-cylinder and rings-cylinder assemblies

The friction drag in kinematic pairs of piston-cylinder assembly is well recognized. It can be determined through measurements on test beds or estimated performing computations according to constructed earlier mathematical models. These programmes require assumption of certain input data that can be changed in order to achieve the lowest value of friction losses. The so far existing programmes analyze separately contact between rings and bore, as well as piston skirt and bore [1]. In fact, the shear of rings in the entire friction loss of piston may be quite considerable. While moving from the BDC towards TDC piston skirt slides over an oil layer thinner than l micrometer. So thin oil layer spreaded over a relatively large surface of the piston skirt can produce considerably high friction loss. The friction drag emerging at the piston skirt - bore contact has been compared for flood and limited (as a result of oil control ring performance) lubrication. The results obtained are close to those achieved experimentally by Jakobs [1] and Halsband [5]. Design modifications of the oil ring and piston have been proposed in conclusions in order to ensure a proper oil film thickness between the piston skirt and bore along the entire stroke.
