Distribution of Trace Amounts of M2+ Ions During Crystallization of NiSO4x7H2O

Distribution coefficients, D, of trace amounts of M2+ ions (Fe2+, Mg2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Mn2+) have been determined during isothermal crystallization of NiSO4×7H2O at 25 graduate C. Their dependencies on the ionic radii of M2+ ions, solubilities and structures of the corresponding sulfates as well as the abilities of MSO4×nH2O to form solid solutions with NiSO4×7H2O have been analyzed. The main factors influencing the D values are: the ionic radius of M2+ ions and the similarity of structures: MSO4×nH2O and NiSO4×7H2O as well as their ability to form solid solutions with NiSO4×7H2O. The dependence of distribution coefficients on solubility of sulfates in water is disturbed by other factors.
