Aldono-1,5-lactones: Preparation, Nucleophilic Substitution and Deoxygenation Reactions

Suitable protected aldono-1,5-lactones having 2-, 3- or 4-OH group free were converted into their corresponding trifluoromethanesulfonic (triflic) esters. In all cases but one the triflic group underwent nucleophilic substitution by treatment with Bu4NI to give the appropriate iododerivatives. The iodo atom in these compounds was easily reduced with Bu3SnH, thus leading to the 2- and 4-deoxy-aldono-1,5-lactones. Instead, 3-O-triflic group underwent the elimination reaction to create 2,3-olefinic linkage.
