A method is described for the preparation of delta4,7-steroidal ketones or delta5,7-sterols from delta5-sterols via the sequence Wettstein-Oppenauer oxidation, trifluoroacetylation to give the delta2,4,6-enol ester, and acid catalyzed isomerization to the delta3,5,7-enol ester, followed by acid hydrolysis, or sodium borohydride reduction, respectively.
