Tetrahedral cable-bar systems in construction of modular tensegrity structures

Abstrakty
A tensegrity structure is an assembly of bars and cables that can be transformed from a closed compact configuration to a predetermined expanded form of a complete stable structure capable of supporting loads. Tetrahedral self-rigid cable-bar modules with a discontinuous network of cables are strong, light and foldable. Modular tensegrity structures are of particular interest for large deployable structures due to extremely low mass afforded by the absence of bending moments in the compression members and by the potential ease of storage and deployment of the flexible tension elements and the short compression ones. When tensioning links are elongated, all cables are slack and the deployable tensegrity structure collapses into a bundle. The same deployment technique can also make small adjustments for fine tuning of loaded structures, or adjustment of a damaged structure. The modular tensegrity structures that can be more precisely modelled than conventional tensegrity, can be controlled more precisely.
