W pracy dokonano przeglądu piśmiennictwa z zakresu nowej technologii wykorzystującej granulowany osad czynny do intensyfikacji procesu oczyszczania ścieków. Gówną uwagę zwrócono na proces realizowany w warunkach aerobowych, ponieważ pozostaje on nadal w sferze intensywnych badań.

The paper is a literature review on new technology that uses granular activated sludge to the intensification of wastewater treatment. The main attention was paid to the process carried out in aerobic conditions because it is still in the area of intensive research. SBR system using granular sludge (Sequencing Batch Reactor Granular) have many advantages that arise from the properties of the granules. Aerobic granules are characterized by regular, smooth and nearly round shape, dense and strong microbial structure, excellent setting ability, high biomass retention, resistance to high and volatile organic pollutant loads and tolerance of toxic substances. In the reactors with aerobic granular biomass in possible to remove nitrogen compounds from wastewater by nitrification denitrification, simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, deamonification and Anammox process. The technology using aerobic granular biomass is also applicable to the removal of phosphorus compounds in the process of biological dephosphatation and denitrifying dephosphatation, but they are poorly recognized processes.
