Initial stiffness plays a main role in joint classification (rigid, semi-rigid, nominally pinned), in stability analysis of frames and for calculation of actual stiffness used in global analysis. In new version of Annex J of EC 3, methods of joints classification according to their strength and stiffness, and method of global analysis correlated to joints classification are included, as well as method of calculation of initial stiffness and design moment resistance. Calculation of joint moment resistance and stiffness without computer use is rather troublesome, so there is a need to develop simple formula for estimation these values for everyday design practice.
