This paper is of the state-of-the-art nature presenting aspects of modelling, methods of analysis and the strategy used contemporary in indirect (component resistance based) and direct (system resistance based) limit states design of steel frame structures. General issues related to actions, components behaviour (joints and members) and structure behaviour are addressed for both noncyclic and cyclic action design, covering in particular modelling and analysis methods of Eurocode 3, the code that has recently been adopted in Poland as the national code. Methods of global analysis of steel frames that take into account local and global imperfections, as well as second order effects, starting from the simplest elastic analysis and ending with the most sophisticated advanced ultimate strength analysis methods are described. Aspects related to the utilization of described methods of analysis in indirect and direct limit state design methods are also focused on. It is highlighted, that the advanced ultimate strength analysis methods create the perspective future for design of steel structures because, by including second order effects, local and global imperfections, as well as the joint and member stilfness degradation, the structural ultimate state is directly related to the limit point on the structure load deflection characteristic. Structural engineers therefore do not need to check neither individual member stability criteria nor the joint performance. Conclusions towards engineering design practice are drawn.
