Ductile cement compositions are increasingly being utilized for difficult well cementing operations, where the wells are described as critical (difficult to construct and secure). Ductile cements should last much longer than conventional oilwell cement during subsequent oil operations after construction, because of their resistance to well events, such as pressure testing, perforation, production, plug-and abandonment etc. Mechanical designs for potential well cement formulations for specific wells and well sections are simulated under determined or predicted downhole conditions, so as to check whether the hardened cements are likely to withstand shrinking and/or cracking under downhole conditions. The different types of ductile cement compositions currently available are described. Possibilities for future international standardization for these "mechanically designed" cement systems are also discussed.
