Among outstanding Italian architects and theoreticians of architecture, only Vincenzo Scamozzi, continuator of the work of Palladio, had direct contacts with Poland. Scamozzi arrived in Cracow in 1592 as a member of the court retinue of the King Zygmunt III Vasa and Princess Anne of Austria. His two week-long stay in Cracow is reflected in measure of the Cracow foot contained in L'idea della architteture universale, a treatise published in Venice in 1615 (lib. I, p. 73). Here, Scamozzi included a project for a fortified palace, designed for Prince Krzysztof Zbaraski, and intendend for Zbaraž in Volhynia. The project was made during Zbaraski's consecutive, several month-long sojourn ion Italy in 1611-1612. In a commentary to his design, Scamozzi recalled numerous meetings and discusions on military architecture with the learned Polish aristocrat. Studies by Adam MiobŠdzki demonstrate that only the initial stage of the Scamozzi project was realised, and that after the death of Krzysztof Zbaraski (1626) the palace in Zbaraž was granted an entirely different from. The book collections of Polish founders architects contained numerous copies of different editions of the Scamozzi treatise. The inventory of Johann Wolff (d. 16366) an architect working for Janusz Winiowiecki, includes manuscripts of a Dutch and German translation of the sixth book on architectonic orders, which appeared already prior to the publication of the treatise in both languages (1640, 1647). The number of copies of the Scamozzi work in Polish book colections was surpassed only by the treatises of Vitruvius, Serlio, Vignola, and Palladio. The reception of L'idea della architteture universale in Polish architectonic writings from the seventeenth ceuntry comprises a highly interesting phenomenon.
