In the Polish history of architecture, for almost forty yars, the following opinion has been manifested that the name Simon engraved on the sloping pilaster-strip of the Cistercian church in WĽchock is the builder's signature. Krystyna Biaosk˘rska, the authoress of this thesis, identified him with Simon, the architect of the church in San Galgano in Central Italy, ascribing to him further Cistercian abbey buildings in Little Poland, especially the church in Koprzywnica where the name Simon is found on the keystone of the north chapel. The author, on the basis of an analysis of the shape of the letters an the workmanship technique, has ascertained basic differencess between both inscriptions, qualifying the first as an incidental inscription revealing the lack of knowledge of stone-work craft. The second inscription (in Koprzywnica), appearing in a devotional context, may, but does not have to be bound with the person of mason-builder. At the same time, the author confirming the Italian character of the WĽchock church masonry, denies the posibility of linking it with buildings in San Galgano, Casamari and Fossanova. The church in Koprzywnica, howerver, has distinct Cistercian architecture features of Germany (Maulbronn, Ebrach), which in some measure seems to be confirmed by source reference related to relations between abbeys in Ebrach and Koprzywnica.
