A commemorative bronze medallion, showing a destroyed bridge span, was cast in 140-144 during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161). "This was the bridge which Horatius Cocles defended for the sake of the Homeland and for his own glory" (A. Palladius). The discussed depiction of pons Sublicius is the only example which originated in antiquity (fig. 5). The medallion illustrates the arch construction of the bridge span. Presumably, this was the actual structure of the bridge during the lifetime of the artist. The author of the article claims that in his portrayal of an event more than 500 years old, the classical artist presented a contemporary construction. Pons Sublicius was the first stationary Roman bridge over the Tiber; during its early period it was predominatly a sacral object. It could not have been erected by the fifth King of Rome, Ancus Marcius, as the annalists maintain, simply because he was a mythical figure. It is most likely that the bridge was built about 508 B.C., the year of the earlier described event, in which Cocles played a decisive role. In the opinion of the author, the bridge was erected probably during the reign of the Tarquinius kings of the Etuscan dynasty (about 616-about 509 B.C.). During the initial period, pons Sublicius was a cantilever wooden construction (fig. 7a), as evidenced by the following premises: - the erection of such a construction or the replacement of its elements could be accomplished "without the use of shoring" (Pliny), i.e. the construction or repair of the bridge did not require scaffolding (this seems to be the only construction which met this requirement), - the type of the construction enabled "the removal or placing of beams according to need (A. Palladius), - the construcion could have been completed without the use of "a nail or iron elements of any sort (A. Palladius). The crossing was maintained in this particular location for over 1000 years (R.M. Ogilvie), with the supporting bridge structure changed upon numerous occasions.
