From mediaeval anchors to iron framework of baroque domes

During works carried out in 1996 with the aim of protecting the dome of the church of the Philippists Fathers in Gostyń, the upper parts of vaulting buttresses, into which flat iron bars were inserted, were uncrovered. Pompeo Ferrari was the builder of the Gostyń dome. He was an architect educated in Rome who worked in the province of Wielkopolska. The existance of iron reinforcements induced the authors to search for similar construction solutions of domes in Italy and their origin. The Italian builders used wooden and iron anchors in Gothic interiors covered by cross vaults and cloister vaults. Wooden girdles strengthen the Renaissance dome of the Florence cathedral, the tambour and dome of Saint Peter's Cathedral in Rome is strengthened by iron girdles. There was no success in finding references relating to reinforcements of Italian Baroque domes in literature. For this reason the Baroque dome of the church in Gostyń, being the work of an Italian architect, brings valuable information. From archive sources it is know that in the bricklayed Gostyä dome there are three great iron girdles and a small one under the lantern. Their sections and position are, however, unknown. The flat iron bars of 8 x 45 mm cross-section inserted into the vault rib were, most probably, connected with the girdles, creating an iron framework whose role was to assure the stability of the dome. Its task has been fulfilled because despite cracks of the brick canopy the construction has not collapsed. The iron Baroque framework performed a similar role as the reinforcement of contemporary reinforced concrete. Perhaps the origins of ferroconcret reach the Baroque or Renaissance times?
