The article outlines the spatial transformation of a provintial urban centre in the south-eastern borderlands. The first half of the nineteenth century created conducive conditions for the development of a modern town. Work was initiated on the consolidation of the municipal organism by pulling down defensive walls; the town was cleared of ruins and slums, existing buildings were repaired and renovated and new ones erected. New sociopolitical conditions, the autonomy of Galicia, granted in 1867, and direct participation of society in municipal self-government guaranteed unhampered steering of town development. The autonomy era witnessed considerable improvement in the physiognomic-spatial appearance of Stanisławów. This e quantitative development was expressed by a considerable growth of construction resources, while qualitative development occurred especially in communal economy. The street network was enlarged and modernised, and communal investments included water works, sewage, gas works, slaughterhouses, etc. New public utility buildings were erected. The functional division of particular town quaters became distinct. A large contribution to shaping the town planning of Stanisławów during the period of autonomy was made by architects and constructors from Lvov. This holds true primarily for the realisation of public utility objects and larger residential houses. Considerable damage was incurred to the spatial network by the first world war. The early 1920s denoted the reconstruction of the town; at this time, Stanisławów became the capital of at voivodeship. Its administrative borders were ltered, and its area grew fivefold. Order was introduced into communal investments thanks to the initiative and commitment of the self-government authorities. The street network was expanded and modernised, and numerous new communal investments were made. The outbreak of the second world war, followed by Soviet and then German occupation, put a halt to the further development of Stanisławów.
