In a reference to a fourth-century inscription in the apse of the basilica of St. Prudence in Rome:"Dominus conservator Ecclesiae", as well as the thirteenth-century definition contained in a treatise on "Conservatio est aeterna creatio", the author accentuates that activity in the realm of conservation, starting with individual architectonic work to the cultural landscape, is creative and produces new cultural and spatial qualities. From the time of antiquity, architecture was considered to be an art based on science not only in reference to technical problems but also the beauty of form and architectonic proportions. Architectonic treatises were scienific works. The culmination of convictions about the scientific nature of architectonic creativity took place during the nineteenth century. In the wake of a rejection of the purist doctrine launched by Winkelmann, attributing the qualities of beauty only to the classical era, the meaning of aesthetic values was gradually restored to succesive epochs. Widely comprehended research yielded lexicons and pattern-books. The modern philosophy of conservation came into being at the beginning of the twentieth century (A. Riegl, G. Dehio, M. Dvorak); subsequently, modern architecture and conservation went their own separate ways. The tragic damages incurred by the last world war caused a divergence in the application of the conservation doctrine, at times generating extreme stands. The author concludes that "just as past epochs contributed new values to the entire cultural milieu, so our era is entiled to make such a contribution, burdened, however, with the duty of opposing all brutal agression. Conservatio est aeterna creatio takes place not only when the conservator performs a creative intervention into the historical monument, but also when he stimulates the harmonious development of the cultural environment. This is his right and moral obligation towards the past".
