The repair and refurbishment of buildings started together with architecture. A long time has passed till the conservation movement as a product of modern society was born. It is worth to stress the cultural diversity (using current definition) which was shown in France and Great Britain about 1850 (Viollet-le-Duc and John Ruskin). It reminds the pluralism in conservation philosophy presented just at the very beginning. On can remind professional discussions at the end of XIX c. Perhaps our approaches nowadays are defined by current values, or maybe by new terms? Discussing the perspectives on sustainability Graham Fairclough of English Heritage stated: "The issue how far we can modify charcter before it is lost - or in another words of living in the present without losing touch with the past - is central to English Heritage's view on the relevant of sustainability". There is nothing to add.
