Review of methods for minimizing the AC-DC difference of planar multijunction thermal converters in the frequency range 10 kHz - 1 MHz

W artykule przedstawiono metody minimalizacji różnicy transferowej planarnych wielozłączowych przetworników termicznych, wykorzystywanych jako wzorce napięcia przemiennego w paśmie częstotliwości 10 kHz - 1 MHz. Praca ma charakter przeglądowy i zawiera wyniki badań przeprowadzonych na przestrzeni ostatniej dekady w PTB oraz NIST.
The most accurate way of determining AC voltage is still an AC - DC transfer realized with a thermal voltage converter (TVC). This is the reason why, at present, most AC voltage standards are based on TVCs of different technology and design. Many National Measurement Institutes (NMI) make use of planar multijunction thermal converters (PMJTC) as AC voltage standards. The paper presents methods of reduction the AC - DC transfer difference of the PMJTCs in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 1 MHz. The work is a review and presents the results of studies conducted over the last ten years by researchers at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Germany and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA. It shows the impact of this research on the design of the PMJTCs. The paper is focused on the following main issues: searching for a better material with lower dielectric loss for a PMJTC membrane, optimization of the PMJTC heater geometry and its bonding pads and integration of the PMJTC with a Tee-connector. The paper presents also the effort which was put into creating more sensitive PMJTC thermocouples and reduction of the impact of reversible thermoelectric effects in a PMJTC heater by using materials with the lower Thomson coefficient.
