W artykule przedstawiono historię rozwoju technologii RFID od momentu wynalezienia i zastosowania radaru do chwili obecnej. Przedstawiono przykłady pierwszych pasywnych i aktywnych systemów RFID oraz ich zastosowania. Omówiono również kontrowersje wokół technologii RFID. W drugiej części artykułu zaprezentowano obszary gospodarki w których z powodzeniem stosowana jest technologia RFID.

The paper describes the history of the RFID technology since the radar invention. There are given the examples of the very first implementations of passive and active RFID systems and their use during the Second World War. They are a basis of today's RFID systems. The progress in research on RFID occurred in the sixties of the twentieth century after invention of first integrated circuits. Then there were developed first commercial RFID systems. However, the lack of uniform standards was not conducive to strengthening the position of RFID in the economy. It was not until the last decade brought consolidation and introduction of the EPC standard, which led to reduction in prices and expanding the area of RFID technology applications. However, in various regions of the world there are still different regulations regarding ISM bands. RFID also raises a number of controversial calls and a number of voices of opposition. There are organizations warning of the danger of loss of privacy that results from RFID technology. The greatest advantage of RFID technology, that is wireless identification, is the biggest security vulnerability of our personal data. In the current technology security systems are not sufficient. The development of technology results in continuous reduction in prices of electronic devices. This factor will contribute to the development and implementation of wireless technology of identification. At the end of the paper the areas of the economy in which the RFID technology is successfully applied are presented.
