Water environment plays the crucial role in distribution of human pathogenic parasites. In past years Cryptosporidium parasites were believed to be the rare and not important human pathogens, but recently human cryptosporidiosis cases were identified in about 100 countries all over the world. Prevalence of Cryptosooridium in humans with symptoms of gastroenteritis varies between 0.1 anc 27.1% and 0.1 and 37.5% in developed and developing countries, respectively. Pure hygienic conditions and restricted access to safe drinking water resources result with the wide distribution of cryptosporidiosis in humans. Waterborne Cryptosporidium infection in humans constitute also the serious epidemiological problem in Poland. In present lecture we will focus on biology of Cryptosporidium dispersal stages (oocysty), one of the most common protozoan parasite of humans in Poland, on the scale of environment contamination with Cryptosporidium and on new methods for the detection of this parasite in water.
