The first church in Garbów, located in the western part of the voivodeship of Lublin, was built already during the eleventh century. The parish organised during the following century was one of the first in this region of Poland. Plans for the present-day church were considered in the first half of the nineteenth century, but the unfavourable policy of the Russian partitioning authorities towards the Roman Catholic creed hampered them for a long time. The first project was devised in 1891, and the construction itself was conducted in 1901-1902. The church is built on the plan of a Latin cross, and the corps is composed of a three-nave, six-span hall. This is one of the largest objects erected by the architect Józef Pius Dziekoński - the two massive front towers are about 75 metres high. The edifice in Garbów is a symptom of the continued quest for a national style, i. e. a variant of neo-Gothic known as the Vistula-Baltic style (mid-nineteenth century). The architect executed three consecutive projects, and in the last one introduced changes already during the course of the construction. Prolonged work on the projects is the reason why this is one of the best designed buildings by Dziekoński; its assets include lucidity and verticality. The erection of the church in Garbów coincided with the twilight of the Polish neo-Gothic style, revealed in the application of more synthetic and creatively devised forms. Apparently, the first project served as a model for a number of hall churches built by the architect at the turn of the century.
