The peculiarity of the operation schedule of all emergency pumps at NPP is their long standby with periodical switching on for testing. During the standby the bearing operating surfaces (surfaces of the shaft journals and surfaces of the bearing shells) contact and therefore when starting the pump the bearing operates under conditions of dry friction, that leads to damaging its operating surfaces. To solve this problem, Central Design Bureau of Machine Building (CDBMB) suggested improving the mentioned pumps. The purpose of improving the pump is to increase its service reliability and readiness for putting into operation by introducing into the pump design the bearings cooled and lubricated with the main circuit medium instead of oil bearings.
