Permanent settlements in Podhale highlands region first appear in XII - XII c. Relatively late settling there results from its rather difficult climatic conditions. First settlers probably came from the Polish lowland in the North, but in in XIV - XV c. there was an influx of people from the East from territories of present Rumania and from the Balkans. These people were predominantly shepherds and hunters. So present population of Polish highlanders has its double roots. They originated their individual and rich culture, also characteristic type of timber architecture of their shepherds shelters, homes, farm buildings, inns and churches. To meet climatic hardships their buildings were very thoughtfully situated and all perfectly fit to land contours, prevailing winds, and sun path. Their settlements developed mostly in valleys, following rivers, runs, and roads. Thus many have linear pattern. This applies also to Chochołów village which is located in Czarny Dunajec river valley. Chochołów village is a peculiar place. Most of the its present buildings comes from the second half of XIX and XX c. But under the economic pressure, mostly because of the development of tourism, and other contemporary life temptations, new houses became still larger so there is a risk that the most valuable characteristic of the region - a harmony between nature and buildings is vanishing. Illustrations adjoined to the article show different stages of the village development: its plan of 1846, old houses which lean to the road, and the new which despite of repeating some local details do not represent architectural values of consistency of the old ones.
