This dissertation concerns general relations between an urban housing environment and the residents' health and good frame of mind and the issue of the evaluation of the quality of a housing environment in the sphere of these interrelations. There are two groups of elements of interest: natural and structural/spatial elements which strongly influence the quality of a housing environment and its evaluation. The starting point was the recognition of the superior role of the health factor in shaping a housing environment. It has been assumed that the quality of the nearest environment is the second among the most important determinants of the quality of life, just after family bliss, and the presence of natural elements and the expected spatial structure really can help to improve this quality and the residents' condition and frame of mind. The first part of the article concerns the issue of the relations between man and a housing environment and the residents' expectations with reference to their housing environment. The second block is devoted to an attempt to formulate the concept of a healthy housing environment and is accompanied by issues that concern the material necessary for shaping and evaluating it: natural elements, a functional and spatial structure and a social interior. Another component of this block is the question of the evaluation of the quality of a housing environment and a search for some methods of its realization basing on the analysis of the indicators, norms and recommendations in use. The third part includes: 1. The right to choose and 2. The right to a healthy housing environment. It has been emphasized that contemporariness requires a possibility of choosing one's dwelling place, basing on the division into three essential zones: central, residential and suburban ones. Each one has different leading functions and a guaranteed basic standard of a healthy housing environment with a similar, but not identical, degree of the structure's saturation in natural elements and a simultaneous search for some intermediate forms which help make conscious choices. The key idea in designing a housing environment is that every human being has the right to live in a healthy environment which secures a full physical, psychical and social good frame of mind and that diversity is a value, not just a result of location. The sanitary character of a housing environment and the resulting desirable contact with nature should be determined at two levels: the first, resulting from man's basic needs and the second, being the expression of the preferable lifestyle. Sanitary activities and expected effects in different zones have been proposed. A two?tier method of the evaluation of the quality of a housing environment: at the stage of designing and functioning of a realized residential complex, distinguishing two groups of factors and elements which can be judged with the help of indicators and a point scale, has been constructed. The conclusion emphasizes the role of environmental education in shaping the quality of the environment. It has been stated that it touches the problem of the society's participation in the process of programming, planning, designing, realizing and exploiting all the elements and fields which create a housing environment.
