The spatial development of Berlin in the time of baroque

The history of spatial development of Berlin accentuates predominantly particular stages in the creation of a "modern" town in accordance with the principles of Baroque urban planning. The author started with a delineation of the celebrated Unter den Linden and concluded with the spatial development of Pariserplatz, Leipzigerplatz and Mehringplatz at the beginning of the eighteenth century. From its origin to contemporary times the discussed town planning configuration has not been subjected to significant transformations. The differences occurring across the centuries affected mostly architecture of buildings not so much the city fabric. Despite the more than two-centuries long time span the still admirable impetus and scale of the project render it a part of the urban landscape. After 1989 Berlin opened a new page in its history, and that which for decades had been divided by the Wall now once again became a single city. Despite postwar reconstruction and town-planning practice - different on both sides of the Wall, no one dared to experiment with the basic historical configuration. Even if one were to agree, or not, with the manner in which town space had been rebuilt or created, the accomplishments of this stage in the town's history cannot be either eliminated or obliterated. A rational approach to present-day efforts appears to be the only correct solution. Contemporary Berlin is awakening from the lethargy in which had been immersed for the last years. The proposals formulated by architects and town planners comprise, on the one hand, a path for returning to the splendour of the past and, on the other hand, an attempt at introducing new ideas into the historical fibre of the town. Such endeavours could produce totally new space whose roots will go back to the past. A perception of the town via the prism of history allows us to achieve a certain distance towards current ventures. Experience shows that historical spatial configurations do well in a competition with contemporary reality, and that they only require good will and eagerness to involve history into the rhythm of a new town.
