In measurement systems applying methods, which involve advanced processing, the value of the measurand is established through a digital processing of the recorded instantaneous values of the signal. This digital processing is preceded by analog-to-digital (a-d) conversion. The impact of the a-d conversion on the measurement signal determines the extent to which the discrete signal preserves the measurand contained in the continuous signal. The parameters of the impact of the a-d conversion on the signal include the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the nominal resolution (N) of an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter. The SNR may be increased and the effect of an improved N may be achieved by means of modifying the process of discretization in the time axis, by applying the oversampling method, or in the value axis, by applying dither signal quantization. The paper describes the two methods of modification and discusses their equivalence (interchangeability) from the point of view of criteria SNR and N, taking into account the theoretical procedures of the improvement of the SNR through modifying the process of discretization in the value axis, by means of applying dither signal quantization. The procedures have been developed especially for this purpose.
