Description of the new approach to qualitative estimation of energy conserving characteristics of engine oil of new classification category API SL has been presented. It is estimated that Sequence VIB considerably differs from Sequence VIA. It is result of significant changes in area of fuel efficiency testing with regarding to ageing process in oil. Therefore, introduction of API SL category with Sequence VIB gives much more meaning for Energy Conserving category. Meeting of Energy Conserving will be much more difficult for oil manufacturers but in change users of Energy Conserving oil will obtain real fuel efficiency over the all oil service time in engine.
