The quality of space in the Polish state during the last decade has been assigned an important place among the interests pursued by researchers - primary architects but also geographers and historians. Changes in space observed during the last years of the twentieth century were a derivative of alterations in the political and socioeconomic system, a new administrative division of the country, growing international exchange, civilizational progress and transformations of external determinants. Numerous Euro-regions have been created along all Polish frontiers; this too was the result of the increased competence of the local administration. Unfortunately, not everywhere do frontier co-operation regions notice the need for preparing joint plans of the spatial development of these regions, which would take into consideration the needs and intentions of terrains on both sides of the border. For a number of years, the territories of western Poland, and especially those located next to the Baltic sea shore, have been the subject of international agreements concerning physical planning within the framework of joint projects signed by all countries taking part in the VASAB 2010 programme, initiated at the beginning of the last decade of the twentieth century. In the past ten years, spatial changes in Poland were, generally speaking, conditioned, on one hand, by a considerable expansion of specially protected areas and, on the other by numerous undertakings conducive for the localisation of complexes and objects causing the dispersion of development, especially around large towns and agglomerations. Numerous areas, recently granted legal protection owing to the natural assets of the natural environment, are situated mainly in eastern Poland, and are associated with the establishment of new national parks, e. g. Mazurski, Biebrzański and Narwiański natural reseves and the enlargment of Bieszczadzki National Park. One of the prime requirements connected with the improved quality of space in Poland is the amended sanitary state of localitities as well as constant care for commonly understood order and cleanliness.
