W referacie zaprezentowano Szkołę Architektury Rural Studio, prowadzoną przy Wydziale Architektury Uniwersytetu Auburn w Alabamie, USA. Rural Studio należy do istniejącego w Stanach Zjednoczonych nurtu edukacji architektonicznej design/build (projektowanie/budowanie) i context based learning (nauka kładąca nacisk na kontekst). Szkoła działa w najbiedniejszym, dotkniętym nędzą rejonie USA, tj. w wiejskich gminach stanu Alabama. Pracuje tam grupa nauczycieli akademickich i studentów, programując, projektując i budując obiekty, które rozwiązują palące potrzeby rodzin i społeczności lokalnych. Powstaje niezwykła, wartościowa architektura mimo dysponowania ekstremalnie niskim budżetem. Odmienia ona krajobraz i istotnie wpływa na poprawę jakości życia mieszkańców. W uznaniu niezwykłych efektów pracy Rural Studio, jej prowadzący otrzymali najwyższe amerykańskie i międzynarodowe nagrody architektoniczne.

This paper presents Rural Studio Architecture School, a Department at Faculty of Architecture at Auburn University, Alabama, USA. Rural studio belongs to design/build type of education with an emphasis on context based learning. The school operates in one of most impoverished regions of USA - in rural counties of Alabama. A group of academic tutors and students works there programming, designing and building structures that answer most urgent needs of families and local communities. Extremely low budget does not limit the creation of striking buildings with exceptional design. They change the landscape and at the same time improve the quality of life for local people. In recognition of their work with Rural Studio both successive directors received most important American and international architectural awards.
