Górnictwo przyczynia się do zrównoważonego rozwoju społeczeństw na świecie poprzez dostarczanie materiałów i surowców służących rozwojowi gospodarczemu oraz poprawie i utrzymaniu warunków bytowych ludności. Podczas gdy panuje powszechna zgoda co do roli górnictwa w skali globalnej, poszczególne przedsięwzięcia górnicze mogą budzić kontrowersje. Istotne jest aby każde przedsięwzięcie przyczyniało się do zrównoważonego rozwoju na poziomie lokalnym i regionalnym. W artykule skupiono się na indywidualnym wkładzie przedsięwzięć górniczych na zrównoważony rozwój. Po ogólnym omówieniu zagadnień górnictwa i zrównoważonego rozwoju następują rozważania dotyczące bardzo silnego nurtu nawiązującego do tzw. siedmiu pytań, wykorzystywanych przy ocenie wpływu określonych przedsięwzięć na zrównoważony rozwój. Każdy projekt musi pozyskać akceptację społeczną; przedstawiono zatem kilka kluczowych zagadnień związanych z uzyskaniem takiej akceptacji. Na koniec opisano wkład dwóch przedsięwzięć w zrównoważony rozwój.

Mining contributes to sustinable development of society worldwide by supplying materials and metals for economic development and improving or maintaining living standards. This paper focuses on the contributions of individual mining projekcts. A review of mining and sustainable development is followed by a discussion of a very powerful approach, referred to as the Seven Questions to Sustainability, which can be used to evaluate the contributions of a specific project to sustainable development. Each projekct must have a social license to operate; some key issues related to earning such a license are presented. Finally, the contributions of two projects to sustainable development are described.
