Ulica Piotrkowska, która kiedyś stanowiła główny trakt komunikacyjny, a w latach 1993-97 stała się pasażem pieszym, dziś pełni rolę wizytówki miasta. Stanowi ogromny kontrast dla innych ulic centrum łodzi, których przestrzeń przedstawia obraz degradacji i zaniedbania. Całościowe spojrzenie na przemiany zachodzące w centrum miasta pokazuje, jakie decyzje przestrzenne wpłynęły na jego dzisiejszy wygląd.

Piotrkowska Street is the most significant street in Łódź. It used to be an axis of the city, as reveals plan from the year 1823, nowadays it is an element that creates character of the city. In the years 1993-97 its northern part became pedestrian area. The global look over the changes that occurred in the city center shows how the decisions on space arrangement influenced its present appearance. Some decisions on functionality and space, taken after the year 1960, effected in development of arterial roads in the historical area of the city. In fact, carrying out the ambitious ideas resulted in demolishing significant part of the city compact settlement, which cultural value has been remarked in the end of XX century. Due to the widening of Zachodnia Street at the fragment of four quarters, well-like courtyards typical for Łódź has benn deprived of their frontages. New public space has been arranged into random layout in the form of open courtyards that are placed deep into quarters. As a result of developing wide arterial roads West-East, there has been created space of new type, spoiling value of existing settlement. Since the time of closing Piotrkowska Street for the traffic, Zachodnia - Kościuszki Street became the most important arterial road of the city center. Together with perpendicular streets and Sienkiewicza Street it forms a traffic and parking system for Piotrkowska Street, as it was established by former decisions.
