An important issue related to the development of solid fuels gasification is the quantity and composition of tars - the by-product. There are several factors determining the amounts of tars produced in the gasification process and their chemical composition. The paper presents the state of the art on the influence the kind of feedstock has on tar formation in terms of amounts and composition in gasification and co-gasification processes. The published world research results on the impact of kind of carbon structure and the catalytic effects of mineral matter present in a fuel on cracking and reforming reactions are also summarized.
