Photodynamic therapy is a new method for local destruction tissue by generating toxic oxygen species using light absorbed by an administered photosensitiser. Following administration of a photosensitiser occurs an accumulation or retention in areas of cancer and disease relative to adjacent normal tissue. The photosensitiser is inactive until irradiated by light, following which cellular destruction occurs. This explantation is a good reason for the scientific and clinical interest in photodynamic therapy. This paper will present an overview of the therapeutic applications of PDT for neoplastic variety of tumors (including ophthalmology, dermatology, neurosurgery) but also in non-cancer applications (such as virus inactivation – herpes simplex), bacteria destruction in dentistry and in dermatology (psoriasis). With a Romania and an European experience, the author will resume the most important results obtained on cell culture and in clinical trials. Some considerations about the PDT activity of some sensitizers on different culture cells (in vitro) are discussed.

Fotouczulacz pozostaje nieaktywny aż do momentu poddania naświetlaniu, czemu towarzyszy destrukcja komórek.
