In mathematical rock mass modeling, such material constants as rock strength, strain at failure and Young modulus are generally used as parameters describing mechanical properties of rock. In the paper, an idea to replace the material constants by a full stress-strain characteristics of the rock is presented. In particular, an influence of two following factors was taken into account: the way in which the experimental stress-strain curve for rock was obtained and the shape of mathematical function approximating that experimental curve. This concept was applied to a model of rock mass subjected to the pillar-room mining system. By means of simple analytical calculations, displacements and loads in the rock mass were obtained. It turned out that it is possible, on the basis of the obtained results, to estimate whether the assumed mining system is safe, i.e. whether or not a dynamic effect like tremor may appear in the rock mass.
