Abstrakty
We discuss the present status of global mantle tomography and distinguish two classes of models: the P-velocity models based on large datasets of travel times from the International Seismological Centre bulletins, often referred to as "high resolution" models, and the S-velocity models based on a combination of surface wave and hand picked body wave travel times, or waveforms, referred to as "long wavelength" models. We discuss their respective strengths and weaknesses and present the view that future improvements in resolution require the utilization of the rich information contained in complete broadband seismic waveform. This is presently within our reach owing to theoretical progress as well as the increase in computational power in recent years.
