On the turbulence intensity of stably stratified shear flow

An analytical solution of the transport equation describing the balance of turbulent kinetic energy in a thermally and salt-stratified turbulent shear flow is obtained. For the closure, a suitable approximation concerning the u'w' component of the Reynolds stress is proposed. The results suggest that certain shear-turbulence interaction counteracts the dissipative decay of the turbulence intensity.
