This paper presents results of investigation on diaphragm-cathode units, which consist of activated cathodes and modified asbestos diaphragms with anisotropic structure or asbestos-free diaphragms. Cathodes were activated with a nickel micromesh coated with cobalt-platinum layer prepared by thermal decomposition of suitable salts. In diaphragms used asbestos was partially replaced by other fibrous materials. The application of proposed diaphragm-cathode units in the test experiments of NaCl electrolysis results in the reduction of terminal voltage by 0.3 - 0.4 V, which corresponds to ca. 10% reduction in electric energy consumption.
