Alaska is composed of the Chukotka-Alaska terrane and of accreted terranes supposedly originated from the disintegrated hypothetical Pacific Ocean continent, and rotated counter-clockwise by spreading of the Amerasian and Eurasian basin, and possibly by spreading of the Atlantic Ocean. The contact of the American and Siberian plates is controversial, however the South Aniuy suture is considered, so far, the most probable location of the collision of the two plates. Mid-Atlantic Ridge continues along the Gakkel Ridge, and supposedly along the Verkhoyansk basin, the Baikal Rift Valley, the Alpine Central Asia continental rift belt, and connects with the Mid-Indian Ocean Ridge with possible ramifiction into Red Sea and the African Rift Zone. Alaska comprises five elongate blocks separated by transcurrent faults. Brooks Range and the North Slope may constitute a tectonic pair, the North Slope forming a miogeosyncline.
