This review article deals with natural and man-made cellulose fibre reinforced plastics. The physical properties of natural fibres are mainly affected by the chemical composition and physical structure (degree of crystallinity, cellulose content, spiral angle of fibrils, cross-section, and by the degree of polimerization). The application of natural as reinforcement in composite materials requires a strong adhesion between fibre and matrix. This article gives a survey about physical and chemical treatment methods which improves the fibre matrix adhesion, their results and effects on the physical properties of composites. The processing conditions play a further important role industrial use of these materials. Natural fibres can be processed with the alredy commonly applied methods GMT (glass mat thermoplastic matrix), SMC (sheet moulding compound) or BMC (bulk mouduling compound). For the processing of thermoplastics reinforced with natural fibres, new methods (e.g., the 'EXPRESS' processing) are of main importance.
