The paper presents the model of a rope which enables us to analyse bending and longitudinal vibrations caused by displacements of one of its ends. Discretisation of the rope is carried out by means of the rigid finite element method. In the planar case, the motion of a section of the rope is described by two generalised coordinates: rotation angle and longitudinal deformation. The model proposed enables us to analyse the influence of wave phenomena in the rope on displacements of the load. Numerical simulations are carried out in order to define the influence of the parameters of the rope (length, cross-section) on the displacement of the load held up at the end of the rope which is connected with an installation on a vessel. The motion of the vessel is caused by wave action.
