W pracy podano przegląd przepisów prawnych wiązanych z problematyką geotermalną, stosowanych w wybranych krajach europejskich. Porównanie przepisów prawnych stosowanych w Niemczech, Francji, na Węgrzech, w Rumunii oraz w Szwajcarii wykazało duże różnice. Polityka rządowa mająca na celu wspieranie rozwoju geotermii koncentruje się jak dotąd wyłącznie na zagadnieniach generowania mocy. Jest jednak jeszcze wiele do zrobienia na polu ujednolicenia przepisów legislacyjnych, oraz uproszczenia procedur wykonawczych w Unii Europejskiej, łącznie z ustanowieniem spójnej polityki wdrażania i pobudzania działań w tym zakresie.
