The objective of this paper is to present recent theoretical and practical studies on the problems of wheel and rail wear modelling. Modelling and prediction of wear in the field of wheel-rail contact is a rather new research area as compared with, for example, wear prediction for different kind of bearings. The problems of wheel profiles, because of increasing speed of the trains, have become important in the last decade. Firstly the safety of the system is related to the wheel profiles, secondly the dynamic performance of the vehicle, for instanee vehicle dynamie stability, vehicle-track force levels and ride comfort are connected to the problems, too. During the last few years computer hardware and software have become sufficiently powerful and useful for simulations study. So, the problem of more realistic methods and tools regarding to: wear model, contact model, vehicle-track model as well as simulation methods has become actual. Finally, wheel profile wear is thus also very much a question of economy.
