In this researeh, an experimental test device of the spiral groove bearing (SGB) spindle is developed. The dynamic characteristics of the SGB spindle are investigated. The effects of rotating speed, load and bearing clearance on the dynamic characteristics are considered. lt is found that both radial and axial non-repeatable run out (NRRO) decrease with the increase of rotating speed of the spindle. The effeet of load on the radial NRRO is relatively smalI, but it has significant effect on the axial NRRO. With the decrease of axial bearing clearance, the radial and axial NRROs decrease. Based on the test results, the optimum parameters for the SGB spindle at different rotating speed are proposed, which include optimum load and bearing clearance, etc.
