Research regarding the durability of face seals used for centrifugal pumps in the petrochemical industry

The centrifugal pumps used in the petrochemical industry are 80-90% equiped with face seals. Many pumps applications are dangerous because the fluids are toxic, inflammable, explosive, cold or warm, making damages when they are not enough sealed. The performances of the face seals reached 2-3 years durability for the pumps and even 3-5 years for the agitator (stirrer, mixer). This was possible due to the research regarding the conception, use of new materials and even training the working personnel. The paper presents the authors' research in this field, achieved through some research contracts with petrochemical plants.
