In the paper, the range of application of tools made of low-alloy high speed steels has been determined on the basis of the investigation of the temperature field distribution in the cutting edge, hardness measurement of the cutting edge, the hot hardness and the assumed systematisation of wear causes. The most effective surface treatment methods have been proposed.
