LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulfonate) is a commercially important material. In its unprocessed state, it possesses a planar lamellar layered microstructure and has the consistency of a soft paste. One of the key parameters in industrial processing is the firmness of the LAS paste: shearing the LAS paste with sodium disilicate powder at 60°C has been used to modify its properties to make it suitable for downstream processes. The resulting change in material properties has been attributed to the transformation of the microstructure to MLVs (multi-lamellar vesicles), which are structurally similar to "onions". The current study investigates the effect of shearing LAS paste at 60°C with a variety of salts. All of the salts were found to induce densely-packed MLV microstructures in the processed pastes. After shearing, these pastes were all firmer than the LAS processed at 60°C without additives. It was also found that the d-spacing, or fundamental repeating distance of the lamellar layers did not affect the tendency of the MLVs to form.
