The results of comprehensive structure and abrasive wear resistance investigations of 6 different kind of intermetallic coatings obtained by gas detonation spraying of self desintegrated Fe-Al phases powders on a structural steel substrate, are presented in this work. The results of chemical analysis, morphology, phase structure and microhardness of individual phases in coatings were compared with the tribological properties estimated in lasting tribological tests with plane-backward motion of following couples: intermetallic coating / chromium plated steel counter-sample or intermetallic coating / cast iron counter-sample. It has been realised that intermetallic protective coatings obtained by gas-detonation method give a realistic prospect to consume profitable properties of intermetallic phases for modification of machine elements surface layer.
