Workpiece flatness depends mainly on the shape errors of the tool used in lapping. Workpiece orientation on the lap has to be found in order to determine the correlation between flatness errors of both surfaces. This orientation depends not only on the total shape error of the tool but also on the workpiece shape and size. This is due to the fact that the analytical lap surface is limited to the area contacting through abrasive grains with the workpiece at the specified time of lapping. One of the method used for flatness errors estimation was applied in order to find the workpiece orientation on the tool. Computational scheme and some simulation results which shows the dependence between tool shape errors and the workpiece orientation are presented in the paper.
