EN

The advantages of sol-gel biomaterials as host matrices for various dopants are pointed out. The role of optode as a transducer of external signal to the detecting unit is discussed in this light, explaining the term of an integrated sensing system. Various sensors with bulk or film sol-gel optodes are presented, with a special emphasis on oxygen and urea sensors. The advantages of sol-gel microsensors are discussed, as well.
